Hostels in Spain and the Running of the Bulls

THE RUNNING OF THE BULLS

The 'encierro' or The Running Of The Bulls is the single most characteristic event of the Fiesta of San Fermin. It is the event which has given the Fiesta world-wide fame and which is broadcast around the world during the fiesta in July. It is held at eight o'clock each morning from the 7th to the 14th of July inclusive. It consists largely of young men (although women may also run) who run in front of the bulls to lead them from their pen up and into the bull-ring. It usually lasts from two to three minutes - although if there are complications due to loose bulls it can last much longer.

The length of the run is some 830 metres (about half a mile) and you don't have to sign up anywhere to take part; you just enter into the run and choose the street where you will run and try to do as best as you can. The run began as part of the process of moving bulls from the edge of town to the bullring. During the mid 1800s, runners began to join the herd on their journey.

This is not the place to go into details but just to give a general outline, things happen more or less like this.

With the first rays of light of the early morning the woodenfencing which lines the route is erected. Then the night-long revellers aregradually cleared from the streets by the local police. The street-cleaners then move in to mop up the accumulated rubbish and dirt caused by the night-long revelry.

All spectators must stay behind the double-fencing along the route. Only first-aid teams can be found in the space between the double fencing. One practical reason forthis is, that the runners have the space to jump over the fence should they need to. So now that the fencing has been shut in, the only way to enter is at the gateway at the Town Hall or at the gateway of the Plaza del Mercado. Many runners who gather at the bottom of Santo Domingo , the start of the run, crowd together and sing a homily to the image of San Fermin which is placed in a niche on the wall decorated with the scarves of the peñas.

The song goes like this: "A San Fermín pedimos, por ser nuestro patrón, nos guíe en el encierro dándonos su bendición" ("We ask San Fermín, as our Patron, to guide us through the Bull Run and give us his blessing").

A rocket goes off at the moment the bulls are let out into the street. A second rocket goes off to let everyone know that all the bulls are now in the street

This is the moment of truth in the Bull-Run; the bulls run like the wind. It is impossible to race them or even keep up with them for very long (interesting information for anyone with athletic pretensions) : The way to do it is, to start off slowly when the bulls are still a good distance behind, and as they draw nearer start running as fast as you can, before they get too close, hang in near them for a short time, as near as you are prepared to risk your skin, and then get out of the way as cleanly as possible. Be careful not to cross the paths of other runners. Look for a gap in the fence to slip through or jump over, or a space against the wall of the street.

As well as the danger inherent in running in front of a bull (it's worth remembering that this is an animal which weights about 600 kilos - some 120 stone - and which has two hard, sharp horns which can cut through practically anything, not to mention possible bruising from just being stepped on, there is also the problem of overcrowding in the run. So you have to be careful not to get pushed over or knocked down by other runners. The crowding is particularly dense at the weekends where the number of visitors to the Fiesta more than doubles.

Each section of the run has its own particular characteristics. Every year many runners always choose to run the same section: In Santo Domingo the run is very fast and spectacular and is risky at the corner of Mercaderes, while in Estafeta it is somewhat slower and clearer. The run into the bull-ring is exciting and colourful.

Once the bulls have gone past the run has finished for you and you will probably feel a special satisfaction and relief that nothing has happened to you. That is, as long as a bull doesn't turn back when it gets separated from the others - something which does happen from time to time and which creates a potentially highly dangerous situation. When you hear a third rocket go off it is to let you know that all the bulls have arrived inside the ring and a fourth and final rocket is sent off when all the bulls have been safely led into their pens.

Between that first rocket and final rocket only a couple of minutes will normally have gone by - but what a couple of minutes!

On the 15th July there is a parody of the run made by some die-hards who refuse to face the fact that the Fiesta is all over and who run in front of the early-morning bus which comes up Santo Domingo street .

Well, that's what the running of the bulls is all about. It is very dangerous, so if you have been up all night, think carefully about what is the best thing for you to do at that decisive moment - to drag your tired body off to bed, or to take the risk of running , or to find a safe place to watch the run from behind the fences.

Hostel Sicily Italian style

This is a sweet hostel in Italy. If you are into the staying and vacationing at the best hostels then this is the place to visit in Sicily.

Situated in a historic piazza next to the "Pescheria", the fish market where local fishermen sell the previous night's catch, a market in arabic style in the historical centre of Catania. The cathedral ("il Duomo") is just round the corner and the ruins of the "roman baths dell'Indirizzo", and the church of the same name are right opposite the hostel.

The building in which the hostel dates back to the early 1800's and the rooms have "royal" vaulted ceilings and antique decorated tiled floors.
The rooms, each roughly 20 sq.m., are furnished with bunk beds and individual lockers. Two rooms on the ground floor are designed for the disabled and they are the only PRIVATE rooms, a double and a twin room, they both share the same big bathroom.

The ground floor, with its "royal" vaulted ceilings and lava-block columns, is an area for relaxing with ethnic music, a dining area with a fully equipped kitchen where the guests can cook their own food.
There's a washing machine, and separate comunal bathrooms for men and women with several shower cubicles, washbasins and toilets. Satellite TV, an international phone and an internet point are available from the hostel.

In another section of the building on the ground floor there is a typical restaurant, an exciting cocktail bar, and underground we host a unique wine bar famous for having a high quality service, from the cellar a door leads into a natural lavic cave through which a stream from the l'Amenano flows.

The restaurant, bar, and wine bar are open to the locals too and the djset lounge and concerts are a must for Catania.

In the summer time the tables are in the square and it seems that the time stops with the breeze of the desert or the passage of the train, the music goes on.

The hostel is open 24 hours. There is no curfew or lock-out, and usually the party starts and ends here.

The restaurant is open for lunch from 1.30 pm to 3.30 pm and for dinner from 8.30 pm to 1.00 am
The bar opens at 12.00 pm and closes at 3.00 - 4.00 am
The wine bar starts at 9.00 pm and closes at 3.00 am

It's easy to get from the Hostel to the sea, the volcano Etna: and the impressive Coast of the Cyclops. What's more, it's near the station, the airport and sea ports, and the lively night-life will be a pleasant surprise.

Hostels in Mexico

Oaxaca
Surfer at Zicatela Beach:
One of the premier surfing destinations in North America.
Not for beginners!

I have to say that the Mexican region of Oaxaca is very beautiful and filled with fun and safe things to enjoy while on an adventure vacation. Whether you fly into Oaxaca City or near by Aculpoco Puerto Escondido is Tops on my list of places that you must visit. It is full of Expatriots and is similar to the Aculpoco of the 1970's. It is amazing and you can surf some groovey waves man! The surfing at the beach in Puerto Escondido is World Class. Zicatela which is shown in my picture is definately not for any beginners as there is a bad shore break there. The shore break is very shallow and for experts only. Away from the main breakers are some better places where beginners are welcomed. Travel in Oaxaca is safe and very cheap. You can rent a very nice air conditioned bungalo for under $300 a month from one of many local expats! The town is full of authentic mexican eateries and very affordable food. There are many Taquerias with many special hot sauces to enjoy. The nightlife is excellent with many Discoteques to dance until dawn. Beer prices are cheap and you wont be sorry. This is the place to visit if you want to see what a real mexican beach town is like without all of the tourist hotel chains. Get there and enjoy it. Stay Low Lower Down

Amsterdam on the road again

So now is the time when I am considering a short trip to the Adam aka Amsterdam for about a 5 day trip. If you needed a vacation as bad as I do right now you would immediately run for the airport. I am trying to head out at the beginning of February and stay for a 5 day weekend. My current plan is to stay at the Bulldog hostel and a small hostel my friend stayed at last summer. I am going to visit the heineken brewery, the Vincent Van Gough Museum, and of course De Rokerji coffee house, Grey Area and a few other odd ball coffee houses to taste the wares!! This will be on a budget of $1200 including airfare, my stay at the hostels, food and of course my fun while I am there. I will mainly be staying in the famous Red Light District but may decide to go out to the flying pig beach hostel for a night. I plan to visit as many hostels, bars, sites, art galleries, and coffee shops as I can possibly make it to. I will even try to use my second of three foreign languages French while there. I plan to stay up all night and sleep during the daytime but wont be sleeping all that much as the vacation will be full of fun and interesting things to explore. I want to meet new people at the hostel and hope to explore all that Amsterdam has to offer during this short vacation. I am even planing my flight as we speak. The airfare from the middle of the USA is only $650 roundtrip. I figure spending about $100 or so each day I am there. I will be taking a camera and will be documenting the entire vacation for everyone to see upon my return. Stay tuned. Stay Low, Lower Down....

hostels vs. hotels

so here it is.....whether to stay at a hostel or a hotel when traveling abroad. Hotels in my opinion are for people who live in a shell and choose to never leave it. Hostels are there for one reason. Hostels are places to meet people. At a hotel you stay in a private room and never even think of talking to the other people in the area. In a hostel you meet many people of different age groups and backgrounds. These people that you meet can open you to new experiences. You might meet someone from another country and possibly get invited to come for a visit as well as a tour by the local. At a hostel you will meet people that can turn into friends for life. Hostels are very unique. Hostels are cheap but are much more diverse than simple hotels for travelers. Traveling is not just about getting away, its about getting to know different places and ways of life. Get out there. Stay at a hostel. Meet people at the hostel. Have fun at the hostel. Do not be afraid just because you watched the movie hostel. Get out there and find the adventure that lies in meeting new people and experiencing new things. Enjoy a hostel on your next trip or vacation.

Right Near da Beach MON!

One of our very favorite hosteling locations is the flying pig beach hostel located in Amsterdam. Location is full of fun adventurous travelers and you will enjoy your stay as long as you try the special brownies! You can even take their free shuttle into the city daily. The hostel is right on the beach and you can also enjoy horseback riding, mountain biking, surfing, indoor snowboarding, and indoor and outdoor ice skating during the winter months. This place is great to stay. They feature party nights with the cheapest beer in town daily and nightly. Flying Pig hostel offers 24 hour access with no curfew or lockout times. They have free internet service. They also provide a free breakfast with your stay at the hostel. This is a great hostel and very close to the city of amsterdam.
